The 2014 Seoul Performing Arts Festival!

Since my week started with a performance at The Painters: Hero last Monday (courtesy of the Korea Tourism Organization), and continued today with a Korean ballet performance in the Gangnam District (also courtesy of KTO), and may end with a JYJ k-pop concert at around COEX this Sunday (courtesy of the Gangnam District Office), I might as well blog about the ongoing festival of performances.

After the month-long Korea In Motion campaign of the Korea Tourism Organization ends on Sunday, both locals and foreigners can still enjoy unique performances at the 2014 Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF).

The Festival actually started last September 25, and will end on October 19. It's an annual festival of artists from seven countries, namely, Korea, Germany, Russia, Belgium, UK, Austria and Colombia. There are 21 performances produced by 19 theater companies.

These performance are mainly held at ARKO Arts Theater and Daehakro Arts Theater, which I think are in the Daehang-no area in Hyewha-dong, which is accessible from Exit 2 of the Hyewha Station (Line 4).

I'm not sure if I'd be able to venture into the Hyewha-dong area for this, although I always rush to that side of the city for some banana-cues. But in case you're able to, the Festival has an official website in Korean and English, which has a detailed list of performances, schedules, venues and ticket prices:

 http://spaf.or.kr/2014english/index_ing.php

It also has a Facebook page, but it's mainly in Korean:

The 2014 Korea In Motion Showcase At Myeongdong!

To keep the beat going, the 2014 Korea In Motion (KOINMO) festival holds a regular showcase performance in front of the Myeongdong Theater right in the middle of Seoul's shopping centrale.

This showcase performance features shows included in the KOINMO campaign. These performances are usually held twice a day at 1PM and 3PM.

During the holidays, I was able to pass by the Myeongdong area twice. The first time was when I headed to the Bukchon Village to visit a friend, and the second time was when I headed to the City Hall area to watch the MISO performance at Jeongdong Theater.
The two performances featured were the non-verbal show Fanta-Stick, and a musicale called Hwarang.

The crowd watching the KOINMO showcase was a mix of locals and international tourists who were there to shop and spend their day in Myeongdong. Fortunately, the KOINMO organizers followed my suggestion to also invite the crowd to watch the Korean performances in languages other than Korean; a KOINMO staff invited the crowd in Korean, English and Chinese.

So, if you're planning to watch these shows, you can see excerpts of the performances at the KOINMO showcase stage right in the middle of Myeongdong.

The 2014 Korea In Motion Festival Is On!

The Korea In Motion kicks off again in Seoul!

Since 2012, the Korea Tourism Organization launches every September a campaign called Korea In Motion, KOINMO in short, to promote non-verbal performances, musicals, plays and concerts in Korea.
For three years now, these non-verbal performance and musicals in Seoul have been spotlighted by the KOINMO campaign, increasing the attendance to these shows by providing discounted tickets and attractive packages to locals and international tourists during the KOINMO period. This lets everyone enjoy these performances included in the campaign at a more affordable price.
In 2014, KOINMO period starts on September 3 and ends on October 5. On these dates, you can either visit the KOINMO booths at six (6) locations around Seoul, including Myeong-dong and the Korea Tourism Organization headquarters near the Cheonggye Stream.

Also, a caricature artist can sketch you and your friend for free if you buy your tickets from the KOINMO booth. The artist is available at a specific KOINMO booth on selected dates though.

And if you're around Myeong-dong these days, the KOINMO Showcase features numbers from selected shows performed by the actual actors and performers on an open-air stage right in the middle of Seoul's shopping centrale. These showcases are performed at 11AM and 1PM.

KTO will help you get your tickets!)

Although I already have my free performance tickets courtesy of the Korea Tourism Organization, I hope to see you at the performance venues just the same.

And perhaps at KOINMO's opening ceremonies, too?

2013 Korea In Motion Opening: Hwarang Musicale And The Rain Stole The Show

At last year's Korea In Motion (KOINMO) opening ceremony, the skies were clear, spirits were high and of course, K-pop fans were excited. That time, the K-pop boy band,  Z:EA, was appointed the 2012 Korea In Motion ambassadors. This year, another boy band, MBLAQ, is the new KOINMO ambassador.

But I guess, the Korea Meteorological Adminstration wasn't able to warn the organizers of last weekend's event as nobody was ready for the drizzle, which eventually became heavier. I certainly wasn't prepared to get wet that night.

I arrived early to get my ticket (and a good seat!) from the K-Performance Supporters booth; I needed a seat at one of the front rows get some good pictures, and luckily, I got a good one.

The show started with an introductory video on Korean tourism, and to get the audience excited, the emcees gave prizes to whomever could provide answers to three KOINMO-related questions. The winners got MBLAQ CDs with their autographs, whose worth, according to the emcees, was about KRW100,000 each. This reminded me of the Limited Edition 2PM CD, which I received from the Korea Tourism Organization a while back.
(Everyone was still dry before the rain)
(Everyone wants to win the MBLAQ CD giveaways!)
After the giveaway contest got everyone excited, the first performance even got the female members of the audience more excited with a few giggles and screaming while the Super Team of the Korean musicale, Hwarang, sang, danced and acted a few excerpts from the musicale.

Last year, at KOINMO open stage, I was impressed with the good voices of these actors. This time, even with new members, Hwarang still packs them in. During their performance, there was an 'audience participation' section, where the actors come down from the stage to ask the ladies help them paint their faces with lipstick, since these Korean warriors from the Shilla Dynasty, have no idea as to what they're supposed to do with cosmetics.

After the fun Hwarang performance, the emcees introduced the next non-verbal performance, Drumcats, which I watched a few months back. Then it started to drizzle, just a slight drizzle, where you get slightly wet. But then, the drops got bigger and bigger, and heavier and heavier, and everyone wetter and wetter.

                        (The audience participation portion
                            of the Hwarang performance)

A few ladies pulled out umbrellas from their bags, while I had to hide my cameras so they wouldn't get wet. And this time, while the Drumcats ladies were still banging their drums, oblivious to nature's intervention in their performance, the show went on.

I looked up the heavens and saw that the dark clouds kept hovering Cheonggye-cheon, which means, if I had soap and shampoo with me, and a towel of course, I would have taken a shower right there on my seat while the rest of the non-verbal performances went on, and perhaps, by the time MBLAQ showed up, I would have rinsed and towelled myself off. Ha-ha-ha!
I then decided to finally leave my seat and take a shelter from the neighboring building. Or even call it a night and go home. Sorry, MBLAQ, I was there at your KOINMO appointment ceremony to catch what's in store this year, and not to catch a cold. Maybe, I'll see you next time.

So, this KOINMO month of September, rain or shine, let's all catch these non-verbal and musicale performances in Korea. I'm already thinking of watching a few while all the tickets can be purchased at discounted prices!

I'm already thinking of Nanta and B-Boy Krung. The former is highly recommended by friends, and the latter reminds me of the topnotch b-boys from all over the world I saw perform at the world championships last July.

Here's the Korea In Motion website in case you want to get those discounted Rush Tickets:

See you at the performances!

Time To Enjoy Korean Performances! Time for KOREA IN MOTION!

Last September 2012, it was my first time to watch the launching for the Korea In Motion (KOINMO for short), where excerpts of Korean performances were featured at the show at Cheonggyecheon. Prior to the launch, as a member of the K-Performance Supporters group, I was able to feature the 'behind-the-scenes' story of the KOINMO flashmob at Insa-dong. Although it was a bit hot that weekend, everyone had fun!

At the KOINMO launch last year, some interesting non-verbal performance shows were featured, and as always, they were popular among the crowd. But what was unique among the shows was a Korean musicale titled Hwarang. It stood out among the featured shows because it was a musicale, and the Hwarang actors were exceptionally good singers!

KOINMO aims to promote tourism through the Korean performances in Seoul, where locals and tourists get to enjoy the shows at discounted prices.

And to kick off the 2013 KOINMO, another a launching event will be featured at the Cheonggyecheon featured selected Korean performances this weekend.

Non-verbal performances are popular, and I wish they would feature more Korean musicales like Hwarang, which by the way, I recommend to everyone to watch. Here's a link to Hwarang's Korean website:

Last year, the K-pop boy band ZE:A was appointed the KOINMO ambassador. This year, MBLAQ will be the new KOINMO ambassador.

I wonder what's in line at this year's Korea In Motion events. Maybe there'll be another interesting show that I would discover...
